Can You Sell a Junk Car Without a Title in Indiana?
- Yes. In most cases you can sell a junk car without a title in Indiana.
- The state has a form for exactly this. It is called a Certificate of Authority.
- A salvage yard is allowed to file that form for you, so you are not the one at the BMV.
- If the title is just lost, a duplicate title is often the faster road.
- A loan still on the car has to get cleared first. Tell us early and we will walk you through it.
There is a car in your yard. It has been there long enough that you stopped seeing it. Somebody was going to fix it, or list it, and here it still sits. Then you go looking for the title and it is not in the drawer.
So the car stays where it is for another year.
We hear this every week at our yard in Goshen. Here is the honest answer. You can almost always sell a junk car without a title in Indiana, and the paperwork is lighter than people think. Selling a junk car without a title is a normal thing around here, not a special case.
The short answer is usually yes
Indiana built a path for this on purpose. The state knows that old cars outlive their paperwork.
Here is how the Indiana BMV puts it. If you own a vehicle whose title is faulty, lost or destroyed, you may apply for authority to sell, give away, or dispose of that vehicle without applying for a new title. That form is the Certificate of Authority, State Form 55018. Once the state approves it, that paper stands in for the title.
Now the part most people never hear. You do not have to be the one who files it.
The state's own application checklist says a salvage recycler may apply for a Certificate of Authority on behalf of the owner, and that the yard fills out its own sections of the form. That is why we tell people the title is not a dealbreaker. We do that paperwork here.
Why the title matters at all
It helps to know why anyone cares. A title is not red tape for its own sake. It answers two questions.
First, whose car is this? Indiana uses the title to prove the vehicle is yours to hand over. Second, does anybody else have a claim on it? If a bank still holds a loan, that bank gets a say in where the car goes.
So when there is no title, the state just wants those two questions answered another way. That is all the extra paperwork does. Nobody at the BMV is trying to keep you from selling a junk car without a title.
This is also why we write down your ID. We keep a record of who we got the vehicle from and when. If anything ever comes back on that car, there is clear proof it left your hands on a certain day. That protects you more than it protects us.
Three reasons people do not have the title
Almost every call we get falls into one of these three. Each one has its own road.
The car is yours and always was. The title is in a box somewhere, or it went in a move. This one is the easiest to fix.
You bought it years ago, cash, and the seller never handed the title over. Very common with cheap cars.
A relative passed, or a tenant left it, or it was behind the barn when you bought the property.
Tell us which one you are on the phone. It changes which form we start with, and it saves you a trip.
How to sell a junk car without a title in Indiana
There are three real paths. Most people only need one of them.
Path one: get a duplicate title. If the car is titled in your name and the paper is just missing, this is usually fastest. You can order a duplicate title from the BMV online through myBMV, at a branch, or at a BMV Connect kiosk. Bring an unexpired photo ID, and have the VIN handy. There is a small state fee.
Path two: the Certificate of Authority. This is the main road for selling a junk car without a title. It covers a title that is lost, faulty or destroyed, and it covers a vehicle somebody abandoned on your property. It is State Form 55018, and we can file it for you. Along with the form the state wants proof of ownership, like a current registration or an insurance settlement. If the car has no VIN left on it at all, a police officer has to do a physical inspection first.
Path three: an affidavit of ownership. This one is for the person who bought a car and never got the title from the seller. Indiana lets you apply for a title by affidavit when the vehicle's NADA book value sits at or under five thousand dollars. On a car that is headed to a yard, it almost always does.
Do not try to pick your path off this page. Selling a junk car without a title looks different for every vehicle. Call us, tell us the story in a sentence or two, and we will tell you which form fits. We do this all the time. You can read more about how we buy vehicles on our salvage and used parts page.
What if there is still a loan on it
This is the one thing that really can stop a sale, so bring it up early.
If a bank or a credit union still holds a lien on the car, somebody has to release that lien before anything else happens. An agent of the lender signs the release, and it has to name you, the date the loan cleared, and the car's year, make and VIN.
Plenty of these are old loans somebody paid off years ago, and the release just never got filed. We run the numbers on every vehicle we buy, so if something turns up we will find it. Then we will tell you who to call.
What to have ready when you call
Five minutes of gathering saves a week of back and forth.
- Your ID. A driver's license or state ID.
- Whatever paperwork you do have. An old registration, an insurance card, a bill of sale, even a letter about the car.
- Year, make and model, and the VIN if you can still read it.
- Where it is sitting. A back yard, a field, a garage, a lot in town.
- Whether it rolls and steers. It does not have to. We just want to bring the right truck.
None of that has to be perfect. People show up with a folder of the wrong papers all the time, and we still get it done.
What happens to the car after
We think you should know where it goes, so here it is plainly.
Once the paperwork clears, we repair and sell some vehicles. Others we part out, which is where used parts for somebody else's repair come from. Either way it is off your property and off your list.
Pickup is free when you sell us a vehicle. You do not arrange a tow and you do not drive it anywhere, because we come get it with our own trucks. That is really the whole pitch. It is not that the car is worth a pile of money. It is that the thing in your yard stops being your problem, and you did not spend a Saturday at the BMV to make that happen.
What we can offer depends entirely on the vehicle. There is no charge to find out, so send us a message or pick up the phone.
Quick answers
Can you junk a car without a title in Indiana?
Usually yes. Indiana has a Certificate of Authority, State Form 55018, that lets an owner sell or dispose of a vehicle when the title is lost, faulty or destroyed. A salvage yard can file that form on your behalf.
Do I need a title to sell you my car?
It is easier with one, but no. We buy a junk car without a title all the time, and we apply for the paperwork ourselves. Just say so when you call so we start the right form.
How do I get a replacement title in Indiana?
If the car is titled in your name, order a duplicate title through your myBMV account, at any BMV branch, or at a BMV Connect kiosk. Bring an unexpired photo ID and have the VIN with you.
Can I sell a car that is not in my name?
Not directly, but there is a road for it. Indiana allows an affidavit of ownership when you bought the vehicle and could not get the title from the seller, as long as its book value is at or under five thousand dollars.
Do you buy cars that do not run?
Yes. Flat tires are fine and a blown motor is fine. Cars, pickups, vans and SUVs all work, as long as it is a normal road vehicle.
Does pickup cost anything?
No. When you sell us a vehicle the pickup is free, and we come get it with our own tow trucks, so there is no outside company involved.
How long does the title paperwork take?
It depends on which form your situation needs and how fast the state moves. Call us and we will give you a realistic idea rather than a guess.
No title? That is a normal Tuesday here.
We buy a junk car without a title every week. Free pickup across Goshen and Elkhart County, and we handle the paperwork ourselves.
